Job Details:
The Assistant Industrial Supply Manager plays a crucial role in supporting the Industrial Supply Manager with daily operations in Juneau, Alaska, and assumes responsibility for the store in the Manager's absence. This position is highly interactive, involving counter sales, inventory management, freight operations, technical product fabrication, and direct customer service across all product lines available at the branch. The Assistant Manager is required to achieve comprehensive training in areas such as gases, metals, hydraulic hoses, and snowplows, ensuring that customers receive expert assistance regardless of who is serving them. Success in this role demands a proactive individual who collaborates effectively with the team, rather than adopting a superior stance, and is ready to progress into a leadership position within the branch.
In terms of responsibilities, the Assistant Manager is tasked with overseeing store operations during the Manager's absence, which includes managing staffing, addressing customer escalations, and making daily operational decisions. They are also responsible for providing guidance, training, and support to the Counter and Customer Service staff, assisting the Manager with scheduling, onboarding, and coaching of branch personnel, while maintaining high standards for customer service, product knowledge, safety, and store presentation. Additionally, the Assistant Manager is expected to cultivate a workplace culture that reflects the employee-owned (ESOP) values of accountability and ownership.
On the inventory and purchasing front, the Assistant Manager inputs and manages stock orders within the company’s ERP system, aiding in the maintenance of appropriate inventory levels to prevent stock-outs and overstock situations. They ensure the accuracy of part numbers, pricing, and vendor records, while also handling the ordering and receiving of freight, verifying counts, reconciling receipts, and addressing any discrepancies with vendors and carriers. Furthermore, they assist with cycle counts and physical inventory tasks to ensure inventory accuracy. In terms of freight and logistics, the Assistant Manager is involved in loading and unloading freight, including container and barge shipments typical in Southeast Alaska, and supports both inbound and outbound logistics operations.
Requirements:
- Experience in industrial supply, distribution, equipment, warehouse, or a related trade / operations environment.
- Comfort with ERP or inventory management systems and standard business software.
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform hands-on work, including hydraulic hose fabrication and freight handling.
- Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate a forklift and delivery vehicles (certification provided or supported).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and work in a physically active warehouse and counter environment.
- Strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Reliability and initiative, with the judgment to run the store independently when the Manager is unavailable.
- Prior lead, keyholder, or supervisory experience in a counter, warehouse, or branch setting.
- Experience with compressed / industrial gas handling and DOT hazardous materials requirements.
- Familiarity with hydraulic hose assembly (Parker or equivalent), metals, or fabrication supply.
- Knowledge of Southeast Alaska freight, barge logistics, and the local trades / marine / mining customer base.
- Interest in advancing into a branch management role.
